Job Description/Tasks/Responsibilities
  • Performs a wide range of maintenance and operations on DOT Type A and NRC Type B shipping casks.   Ensures compliance with EnergySolutions policies and procedures and with local, state and federal regulations. Performs operations work as part of a team of semi-skilled and skilled workers.
  • Operates a variety of hand and power tools; small, fixed-facility (light) equipment; medium weight equipment; overhead cranes. These tasks are necessary to maintain a healthy and productive workforce, to ensure smooth company operations and to ensure customer requirements are met.
  • Monitors and operates equipment using normal, abnormal and emergency operating procedures. Operates equipment within the bounds of the Documented Safety Analysis (DSA) as applicable.
  • Operates equipment under the direction of an Operations Manager or a qualified Cask Technician.
  • Works under the direction of the Operations Manager as applicable, according to location.
  • Complies with all local, state and federal health and safety regulations and site health and safety requirements.
  • Complies with all requirements for wearing personal protective equipment while performing job duties.
  • Participates in procedure development and revision, job hazard analysis and safety walkdowns as applicable.
  • Uses a variety of equipment to perform cask handling operations.
  • Operates power-driven equipment such as trucks, yard jockey, power mowers, and hoists/forklifts. Reports the need for major mechanical adjustments and repairs.
  • Uses machines and equipment to move packages.
  • Performs cask handling tasks (i.e. lid removal, gasket inspection/repair, cask refurbishment, inspect/rebuild ratchet binder assemblies, etc.).
  • Inspects rigging and assists in hooking slings/wire rope to crane rigging/hook(s).
  • Helps secure containers. Determines when containers are secure and meet Department of Transportation regulations.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

  • General knowledge of local, state and federal health and safety regulations [e.g., Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)]

  • Ability to read computer screens and printed documents and to operate small equipment
  • Basic computer skills, including the ability to operate equipment
  • Ability to successfully pass a fundamentals entry examination as applicable
  • Strong attention to detail
  • Detailed knowledge of facility processes, operations and equipment
  • Demonstrated ability to handle more complex work and schedule tasks assigned
  • Working knowledge of rigging practices (if applicable to work performed)

Physical/Mental Requirements and Working Conditions
  • Ability to comprehend procedure and work package instructions as applicable
  • Ability to perform physically demanding work
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds
  • Ability to push and pull up to 35 pounds and carry up to 50 pounds; handle, grip, and reach above or below shoulder
  • Ability to use hands and feet to accomplish tasks as assigned
  • Ability to sit, stand, walk, climb, bend/stoop, crouch, squat/kneel, twist at the waist and balance
  • Ability to effectively communicate; speaking, reading, understanding, writing and hearing clear English; pass audiogram in hearing conservation program as required by location
  • Normal vision (with or without correction)
  • Ability to perceive depth and adjust focus; basic hand/eye coordination
  • Ability to see close and distance, basic colors/shades, and peripheral vision
  • Ability to work in extreme weather conditions and environments wherein there is exposure to noise, dust, grease, smoke, fumes, noxious odors, gases, chemicals and mechanical and electrical hazards
  • Ability to work inside an office, outside, or in extreme temperatures
  • Ability to work with machinery vibration, power tools, moving objects, and slippery/uneven walking surfaces
  • Ability to work while wearing chemical resistant coveralls and respiratory protection
  • Ability to work with others and interact with the public; perform under deadline pressure
  • Ability to operate equipment and drive a vehicle
 
Minimum Education, Experience and Certification Requirements
Education
  • High School diploma or GED

  • Ability to obtain and maintain applicable qualification card required for cask handler and rigging/signal person
  • Ability to obtain overhead crane qualifications within 12 months.
  • Valid driver's license with clean record required
