Is responsible for laboratory-based tasks, which include sampling, testing, measuring, recording and analyzing results and conducting necessary research. Provides the technical support required for a laboratory to function effectively while adhering to applicable procedures and health and safety guidelines. Performs radiological analyses of samples collected in support of the site's Environmental Monitoring Program and for other internal and external customers.
Performs a variety of laboratory-based tasks aimed at helping customers improve their ability to solve their problems, lower their costs, reduce their liabilities and increase their efficiencies. Performance of these tasks also helps ensure continued company financial health.
Performs analytical procedures in accordance with established permit and licensing requirements.
Evaluates analytical data for completeness and validity.
Accepts samples for routine, non-routine and site operations process sampling.
Logs samples into the laboratory and logs sample data into a computer system.
Determines sampling requirements and prepares samples for on- and off-site analysis and assists other personnel with sample preparations.
Prepares appropriate sample containers and documentation.
Tracks sample/container movement.
Is responsible for the correct disposal of all environmental samples and laboratory waste.
Prepares various types of radiological analyses of samples.
Maintains inventories of radiological materials.
Supports environmental sample collection activities as required to meet project schedules.
Performs radiological surveys in support of laboratory operations.
Collects, inventories and records environmental thermoluminescent dosimetry data.
Operates, maintains and calibrates laboratory instrumentation, which includes alpha and gamma spectroscopy systems and liquid scintillation, gas proportional, ICP systems.
Performs preventive maintenance checks and monthly inspections and calibrations.
Performs quarterly safety inspections. Prepares and reviews internal laboratory and external laboratory reports.
Ensures the laboratory has adequate supplies.
Files and archives laboratory records, including samples collected, for future reference.
Performs other duties as assigned.
Job Requirements/Skills
Attention to detail and adherence to strict good laboratory practices
General knowledge of basic chemistry
Ability to handle data entry tasks for sample analysis and reporting
Detailed knowledge and understanding of incoming shipment requirements
Detailed knowledge of laboratory equipment, processes, quality control and sample management
Detailed knowledge of radiation work permits and other permits and licensing required by the company
Strong verbal and written communication skills
Intermediate familiarity with the use of Microsoft Office products
Ability to use more complex equipment and to make decisions regarding the use of appropriate analytical methods and sample quality results
Detailed knowledge of standard gamma spectrometry and alpha spectrometry procedures including preparation, extraction, digestion and analysis
Detailed knowledge of sample management, laboratory equipment, instrumentation, processes, quality control, data review and management for gamma spectrometry and alpha spectrometry
Ability to prepare samples for Radioisotope and Trace Metals/TCLP analysis
Ability to calibrate, operate and maintain equipment used for metals and radionuclide analyses
Ability to prepare standards and reagents for used for metals and radionuclide analyses
Physical/Mental Requirements and Working Conditions
Ability to lift up to 50 pounds
Ability to work occasionally in extreme temperatures (hot/cold)
Ability to wear personal protective equipment including a respirator
Ability to use hands to accomplish tasks as assigned
Ability to sit, stand, walk and climb
Ability to perform highly repetitive motions with fingers, hands, wrists, shoulders, and legs
Ability to work inside, outside, in high temperatures and in dry conditions
Ability to effectively communicate; speaking, reading, understanding and hearing clear English; pass audiogram in hearing conservation program as required by location
Basic computer skills
Ability to read small text, documents and procedures
Ability to wear protective equipment such as: goggles, gloves and steel toe boots
Ability to perceive depth and adjust focus

Certified hazardous waste and radiation worker

Minimum Education, Experience and Certification Requirements
Education
High School Diploma or equivalent experience
Fundamental mathematics education (arithmetic, algebra, geometry and statistics). Some high school chemistry preferred.
An associate’s degree (or higher) in environmental science, chemistry or directly related field preferred
Certifications
Sample technician qualification preferred
A 40-hour HAZWOPER certification
Radiation Worker Training I
Required Experience
3 to 5 years experience as a lab technician
Experience using gamma spectrometry and low background alpha/beta counters
Preferred Experience
Experience using Inductively Coupled Plasma (ICP)
Experience performing radiochemistry lab sample digestions and separations
Experience using alpha spectrometry
Experience using liquid scintillation instrumentation
